Leadership at the Intersection of Sports and Society

Scott D. Yakola

Description from DukeHub

This course examines the dynamic intersection of leadership paradigms, athletic victory, and major societal forces. Drawing from psychology, sociology, and leadership, students will investigate how sports organizations, civic movements, and political leaders act as catalysts for positive social change. Through a curated selection of readings and films, the curriculum explores how athletics both reflects and shapes national identity, racial integration, economic crises, and collective healing. Students will evaluate foundational leadership theories and navigate the unique ethical dilemmas and pressures of high-profile environments. Key components include self-assessment, ethical decision-making, and understanding how leaders shape communities and organizations.
