The Chosen, the Bible, and Jesus
Mark Goodacre
Description from DukeHub
This course critically assesses 'The Chosen,' the first multi-season television series to depict the life of Jesus and his followers. The course studies the series as a paradigmatic example of Jesus in film, analyzing the ways that it adapts, harmonizes, and creatively embellishes its source material, the Gospels, alongside other early Christian literature, the Hebrew Bible, Second Temple Jewish literature, as well as archaeological and other ancient world materials. Students will develop an in-depth critical appreciation of the series in the light of academic study of its source material, alongside an understanding of its contemporary appeal in American Christian culture.
