Spain in Africa: Empire, Culture, and Colonialism
Katryn Evinson, Mateus Sanches Duarte
Description from DukeHub
This course explores the histories and legacies of Spanish colonialism in Africa from the nineteenth century to the present. Focusing on Equatorial Guinea, Morocco, Western Sahara, and the Canary Islands, the course examines how empire shaped politics, culture, race, and everyday life in both Africa and Spain. Through literature, visual culture, museums, film, and historical documents, students investigate colonial violence, anticolonial resistance, decolonization, migration, and contemporary debates over memory, restitution, and the enduring legacies of empire.
