ENGLISH 272S
Classics of American Literature, 1960 to Present
Allison R. Neal
Description from DukeHub
This course surveys the major works of American literature of the past sixty years, a period that includes the civil rights and women's liberation movements, the Vietnam War, the rise of neoliberalism, and the invention of the internet. What did it mean to be an American in an era marked by countercultural rebellions, globalization, and an evolving mass media landscape? We will trace how these political, social, and media upheavals produced formal and cultural innovation, ranging from postmodernism's rejection of grand narratives to the emergence of a variety of multicultural American voices to the autofictional 'I' of the twenty-first century. Readings will include work by Thomas Pynchon, Sylvia Plath, Amiri Baraka, Adrienne Rich, Don DeLillo, Toni Morrison, and more.
