Carceral Health: Care, Custody, and Population Health

Hedwig (Hedy) Eugenie Lee

Description from DukeHub

Course explores the physical and mental health consequences of incarceration on individuals experiencing confinement, their families, and communities. Topics include pregnancy in prison, solitary confinement, correctional officers’ health, and aging in prison. Students draw on the humanities to better interpret the sciences, producing visual art that depicts health-related challenges among justice-involved individuals. Using art as a storytelling tool and subject of sociological inquiry provides students deeper understanding of the U.S. carceral system and its often-overlooked public health consequences. Pre-reqs: SOC 228, HIST 147, or medical sociology course.
