Drab Launcher
A home screen that makes a phone boring.
Drab Launcher replaces the Android home screen with one column for today and puts a short wait in front of every app you mark.
Android launcher. Build 3543. Source not public.
Why
Phones are built to be interesting.
- 5 h 1 min
- daily phone time, US adults (Reviews.org, 2025)
- 58
- measured pickups a day (RescueTime, 2019)
Drab Launcher is for someone who wants the phone to lose those small moments. The example user is a student job-hunting from a library. Every app stays installed. The launcher makes a feed slower to reach and the work quicker to start.
What it is
One column for today and a dock of four apps.
Home shows the clock, the date and one quiet health line. Below them is the Today card. The Now task comes first with its due time in red, every row has a tick ring, and a Start 25 pill begins a 25-minute focus session. Then comes one line for the next event, and any widgets you add.
Apps sit in a dock of four at the bottom. There are no pages, no app grid and no status bar. The launcher comes with Drab Browser, a browser whose blocklist is compiled into the app, so the web is not a side door.
Every app is on one of three lists.
Never locked
Never touched. Phone, messages, banking and maps live here and can never be locked.
Timer only
Asked why before it opens, never shut. New apps start here.
Locked
The only apps that are ever shut, at bedtime, in the morning, during focus sessions and under contracts you set. Social apps start here by name.
Bedtime runs from 23:00 to 06:00 by default, and the morning stays phone-free for 30 minutes after the first unlock. The shut screen names its cause and its end time. There is no Open anyway button. It’s important opens the app for 2 minutes after the wait and a 12-character reason. It works 3 times in 24 hours, and every use is logged.
Ask why
Every marked app asks why before it opens.
First comes one breath, 4 seconds in and 6 out. Then a wait that grows with each open today: 10, 15, 25, 40 and 60 seconds. At night the wait doubles, and it never goes above 60. The first two opens take one tap or a mood chip. From the third, you type a new reason of 12 characters or more.
The screen reads your own words back, such as “Last time: ‘just a quick look’, stayed 20 min”. An Instead line points at the next deadline in the calendar, such as “due in 9 h”. When the time you asked for runs out, 10 minutes by default, it asks again with Keep going or I’m done. An accessibility service catches the open anywhere, including a link from a notification. It never covers a ringing call or the lock screen. In the app’s own words, “This is friction, not a lock.”
Wait before loosening
Tightening applies at once, and loosening waits.
A stricter setting takes effect immediately. A looser one waits 5 minutes, 1 hour, 12 hours or 24 hours under Waiting to loosen. That covers unmarking an app, a shorter wait, fewer shut hours and turning the lock off.
The wait counts elapsed time, so changing the clock or the timezone does not shorten it. Restoring a backup cannot loosen anything. Optional uninstall protection adds a device admin step and the same delay before the launcher can be removed.
What I learned
What the full review found.
These findings come from the full review, which has the model, the evidence and the game theory.
Only the pause has evidence behind it.
A field study of 280 users found targeted-app use down 57 percent on average, and the open abandoned 36 percent of the time (one sec with Max Planck, PNAS 2023; figures quoted from the vendor’s summary). No outcome of this launcher is proven yet.
Anything that can be undone in ten seconds gets undone at 11 pm.
That is why loosening waits, and why the wait counts elapsed time.
Blocking an essential app once gets the whole launcher removed.
Phone, messages, banking and maps can never be locked, and new apps start as ask-only.
Typed rituals made the launcher one of the biggest apps on the phone.
A tool built to cut screen time had turned into a daily writing task. The review’s verdict is to cut to a core, move the off switch off the phone and aim at three outcomes that can be measured.
